There are may ways to define Lomi Lomi. Lomi meaning both ‘to knead’ as well as ‘to shift’ or transform, it’s repeated twice to address this more firmly. It represents a healing touch, where the healing energy comes directly from the ancestors, gods, goddesses, guardians and guides. This healing energy comes in through the crown of massage therapist’s head finding it way down to the arms and hands, especially the hands. What I love, because it resonates very strongly with me, is that the person on the table is always viewed as family, because we are all family and also because when we view our client as a loved family member, we can pour so much more love into the body. Lomi Lomi is about loving the body! When we lovingly massage family, being connected with them from soul to soul, powerful healing and thus transformation is possible. The massage is a deep massage that travels from the surface of the skin all the way to the level of the bones, where the Hawaiians believe our ‘Mana’, our life force, our essence, our soul story, our DNA, is held.
In order to optimise this healing experience, I will always ask everyone who is about to lay down on my tabel to do 2 things:
1) Forgive and let go of anything (what is possible for you) that may be blocking you from receiving the healing energy: to do lists in your head, resentment, anger, frustrations towards self and others. This is done by forgiving yourself and others before you lay down on the table. I will do the same each time before a massage to ensure I am a pure conduit, a hollow tube free from blockages, so the healing energy can flow freely through my body, through my hands into yours. In Hawaii this process of removing the stones from our bowl of light is called Ho’oponopono. It’s the healing practice of making things right within ourselves in our relationship with others. It often precedes Lomi Lomi. When we stay stuck in arguments, unhappiness, etc. we are no longer in alignment. This disalignment can travel into the body to the level of the bones. Both are healing practices and Hawaiian practices are all about pono: doing what is right and making things right when needed. Ho’oponopono is about make things right again in the relationship with yourself and others, while Lomi Lomi is there to create alignment at the level of your bones. I really feel that these 2 practices, together with prayer, is essential for keeping our Mana strong. One day I will complete the training to become a Haku, master of the Ho’oponopono process, but for now Lomi Lomi massage has my full attention. 🙂
2) Set an intention for the healing and share this with me, so that I may share this with my and your ancestors and our collective support field when you lay down on my table.
